Market Hall Museum reopens Saturday 18th February!

Join us in celebrating the opening of Market Hall Museum on Saturday 18th of February and then enjoy the following week full of activities and events for families and adults. 

The redeveloped Museum, celebrates the stories of Warwickshire and its people and has been refurbished thanks to a generous grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and with the support of heritage, natural history and community groups from across the county.

Explore our new galleries, discover treasures from Warwickshire’s collections and archives, and enjoy a tour of this historic, landmark building reimagined for our next generation of visitors. Scroll down to see all the details or Download the PDF flyer

Saturday 18th February 10.30am – 5.00pm

Join us at 10.30am and be one of the first to step inside the new Warwickshire Museum!

Be amazed by the new displays and interactives, and join one of our special MusGuided Tours (from theatre company Talking Birds) for an alternative and offbeat look at the collection! Get creative and help us build a life size Warwickshire bear with Ruth and Adrian Spaak. Try out one of the new family museum trails and listen to a selection of Show and Tell talks by our museum   curators and archivists. All activities are FREE, just drop in.

Show and Tell FREE talk: The New Museum

Wednesday 22nd February 10.30am – 3.00pm

Discover more about Warwickshire’s Jurassic past and get up close with fossils from the handling collections. Help us complete an underwater dinosaur diorama. Create an articulated sea beast that would have roamed Jurassic Warwickshire and make a terrifying dinosaur mask to wear home. Cost: £2.50 per child, children must be accompanied by an adult. No need to book, just drop in.

Plus visit Horace the Travelling Pliosaur Cinema

Market Place, 11.30am – 1.00pm and 2.30pm – 4.00pm.

Horace the Pliosaur is a giant, 35 foot-long sea lizard. Fresh out of the Jurassic ocean, Horace is 165 million years old. That’s even older than your Grandad. Brought to you by performing professors and dotty groom Joe, audiences are invited to explore Horace and help prepare him for the day, brushing his teeth and massaging his paddles, before venturing inside his belly on a cinematic journey full of slimy surprises! Performances will be free but ticketed, and will last for 40 minutes. Tickets can be collected from 10.30am from a steward stationed by Horace.

Wednesday 22nd February 5.00pm – 7.00pm

Come and see the finished knitted hangings made by Market Hall Museum’s successful Knit and Natter group. Learn to knit or improve your knitting skills with STRADFAS volunteers at this informal and fun knitting session. FREE drop in, no need to book. 20% discount in our shop and cafe for all visitors.

5.00pm – 7.00pm or 7.30pm – 9.30pm

Make and print linocuts with artist printmaker and tutor Karen Stephenson. Whether you are a complete beginner or a more experienced printmaker, this workshop will provide you with the inspiration to design handmade prints, using some of the newly displayed items in the museum for inspiration. Enjoy having the museum to yourselves while indulging in this informal workshop as you experiment with paper and ink. Cost: £15. Subsidised by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Friday 24th February 10.30am – 3.00pm

Celebrate science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics with a day of STEAMpunk fun. Build a flapping bird and create some steampunk-style goggles! Follow the mathematical museum trail and find out if you can hold your nerve in a tea duelling competition. Come dressed up in your best STEAMpunk clothes or try on some replica costume . £2.50 per child. No need to book, just drop in, children must be accompanied by an adult. PLUS! Take a FREE ride in ‘Pif-Pafs’ spectacular, theatrical vehicles, which will be taking trips around the Market Place during the day. Come away with Pif Paf on a journey of your wildest dreams. Choose a traveling companion, find the Departure Lounge and we’ll take care of the rest. We take two at a time and dress you in hats so sublime. With Captain Bigshot, you’ll fly up up and away, crossing continents in turbulent adventures, or dive under the sea with Captain Calypso, encountering denizens of the deep. Storytelling workshop with Dave Pickering

Do you have a story you would like to tell? Led by renowned storyteller Dave Pickering, this workshop will show you how to find and shape a story. Through practical exercises you will explore ways in which stories can be told and develop confidence to then share your story with a live audience. Do you have a story you would like to tell? Come and share your tales of Warwickshire.  Stories, poems, songs. Whether funny, sad, big, small, weird wonderful, heartwarming or malevolent, we want to hear from you. The event will be hosted by renowned podcast producer and storytelling champion Dave Pickering. You don’t have to be a professional performer to take part. We are looking for people from all walks of life, and you don’t need any experience. Stories should be up to 7 minutes in length. Book a performance slot in advance by contacting heritageeducation@warwickshire.gov.uk or sign up on the night. Suitable for 14yrs . FREE, just drop in.
