Victorians, Schools Loans Box - Loan Box Subscription Service

Victorians, Schools Loans Box

In the box you will find a collection of original objects to use with your class to help them learn about the role of women in Victorian Britain, provoke conversation and support learning in the classroom.

The teacher pack contains information about the objects in the box, local history links and suggested activities that will use the objects. Each activity stands alone and can be used independently of the others. The activities and objects in this box can be used to extend the topic of the Victorians beyond the history curriculum.

Object list

This list, from the teacher pack, shows the objects that are included in the Victorians Loans Box.

Jelly Mould

A metal jelly mould, this would have been used both as decoration and in the kitchen. Rich Victorians enjoyed elaborate dessert designs so moulds like this would have been the centre piece of a dining table.

Jelly’s and blancmanges would have been made using a mould like this. Cooks in kitchens were predominantly women but in larger households they may have employed a chef who would have been a man.

Flat Iron

The Flat Iron was a very popular form of iron during the Victorian period as it was easy and cheap to make, it would be heated up over a fire, then when it was hot enough it would be used to iron out the creases of clothing. Most women had two irons so one was always heating while the other was being used. They are much heavier than the irons we have today.

Doing the laundry, washing and ironing, was exclusively done by women and girls in Victorian times.

Victorian coins

A collection of Victorian coins, including a farthing, a three pence, a penny and a half penny. These would have been your common loose change for the Victorians, and were in use until 1971 when the modern penny and pound got brought into use.

Chatelaine

A chatelaine is a decorative belt hook or clasp worn at the waist, by women, with a series of chains suspended from it. Each chain is mounted with useful household appendages such as scissors, thimbles, watches, keys, vinaigrette, and household seals.

The chatelaine would have been worn by a wealthy Victorian woman.

Chatelaines used to also include the keys to the home and were worn as a status symbol to show the owner was a householder. There is evidence of women wearing chatelaines from the Anglo Saxon times.
