I wear what I want to wear project

This project worked with a group of 6th form students at a local comprehensive school. Using photography and audio tape, it recorded what they wear, how they shop, and their views on style and fashion. Some of the students donated clothes and accessories.

Baggy trousers

“These trousers are baggy, which is a particular style of the skater – baggy trousers. I can see myself looking back and just thinking ‘ Why did I wear such ridiculous trousers?’ – but at the moment that’s kind of fashionable.”

Rings

“I have a ring fetish – something like 40 to 50 rings, and I’ve had to start putting them in storage because they won’t all fit in my jewellery box!”

Pierced ears

“I’ve got double pierced ears – that was a few years ago when I was a rebel at 14. I tried to convince my mum to let me have my nose pierced, and eyebrow and lip and everything but I’m glad I didn’t – I think it’s just a stage!”

Feminine qualities

“I don’t know how you define ‘feminine’ really – I mean some people would say ‘feminine’ is in a dress with pretty flowers, but I wouldn’t really say that was feminine. Feminine qualities have changed for our generation.”
