Church registers and census returns

Church of England parish registers and census returns

Our guide to Church of England parish registers and census returns lists the dates of the records we hold for Warwickshire parishes.

Details listed in the tables

  • The names of the parishes are arranged in alphabetical order.
  • The columns headed baptisms, marriages and burials give the covering dates of the register entries. Gaps of less than 25 years are not identified and the dates given do not include sporadic entries.
  • The census column indicates the years for which the Record Office has microfilm or microfiche of the census returns. ‘All’ indicates returns for the years 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901. Pre-1841 census returns (which survive for a very small number of parishes) are not listed here and we do not hold microfilm copies of the 1911 census.
  • The Poor Law Union for each parish is indicted in the final column. Created in 1837, each Union became a local registration district, and this remained the case into the 20th century. This column therefore gives the Registration District for each parish in the 19th century.
  • It should be noted that some changes to Poor Law Union boundaries occurred, of which the most significant were the transfer of the three Warwickshire parishes in Hinckley Union to Nuneaton Union in 1896 and the abolition of Aston Union in 1911.
  • For parishes within Birmingham pre-1974 borders please contact Birmingham Archives and Heritage Service.

Nonconformist church registers

Lists of registers we hold for nonconformist churches including Baptist, Congregational, Methodist, Presbyterian, Quaker, Roman Catholic and Unitarian. These lists give the covering dates for the registers and the reference number to the document or microfilm.
