What does this database contain?

This database contains information on the types of records to do with World War One that are held at the County Record Office in Warwick. It does NOT contain images of the records themselves.

What sort of records are in the database?

The database includes personal collections such as letters, diaries, postcards and photographs and public collections such as newspapers, school log books, county council minutes, parish records and more. The records are nearly always to do with Warwickshire.

Who compiled the database?

The database has been compiled by a team of volunteers who have been listing and exploring the First World War collections held by Warwickshire County Record Office.

What to do if you want to see the record in person

The database does noy contain images of the records themselves. You will need to visit Warwickshire County Record Office in Warwick to view the records.

How to order a record from Warwickshire County Record Office

Each record has an individual document reference number (eg, CR3081/4). You will need this number in full and the document name to be able to order anything.

How to search the database

The best way is to start broad and then narrow the search if you need to. You can search by subject (eg, agriculture), sub subject (eg, labour), date, place, and ‘any text’ search or any combination of the above. You can use the ‘more search options’ button too, which will allow you to search by collection number, name and type.

Using the ‘search by date’ function

You need to enter the date in the format dd/mm/yyyy. So if you want to look for entries for the whole of 1914 you will need to enter ‘date from’ 01/01/1914 and ‘date to’ 31/12/1914.

How to start a new search

Use the ‘clear form’ button to start a new search.

Can you sort the columns on the main index page?

Yes, If you click on the column headings on the main index (home) page you can organise the data in ascending or descending order.

Can you export the records into another format?

Yes, after performing your search, if you click on the ‘Download to Excel’ button this will export all the records into Excel.

Can you print any of the records data?

Yes, if you click on ‘view’ to see the record details. You will see a green print button, click on this to print the record details. If you need to print multiple records. The best way to do this is to export the data into Excel and then use the print option within Excel to print the sheets containing all the records data.
