Workshop outline	Investigate original documents from World War 1 at Warwickshire County Record Office and tour the strongrooms where they are stored. A mixed collection of documents are available to be examined allowing for different learning styles and abilities; letters, photographs, newspaper articles and postcards. They cover themes such as the role of women in the First World War, conditions on the Front, life back home, commemorating the fallen. At the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers Museum pupils will be able to handle real objects from the museum’s collection. They will be able to try on replica costume and feel what it was like to wear a World War 1 uniform. To commemorate the First World War pupils will make a poppy and commemorative medal to remind them of what they have discovered.
Key skills covered	Chronological understanding The significance of the poppy in this context. Drawing conclusions about life in the past from different sources of information. Interpretation – talk about the types of written, visual and physical evidence that exist in museums and archives to tell us about the past. Historic enquiry – comparing/contrasting information, identifying and analysing evidence. Questioning evidence Group working Empathy with the soldiers of the First World War.
